Top 5 Tips for Preventing Blocked Drains at Your Home

Have you ever suffered the misfortune of having blocked drains at your Brentwood home? Whether you lost access to flushing toilets, use of the bath and shower, or both, it’s something that you never want to experience again. While the need for plumbing services will always arise from time to time, you can take proactive steps to avoid future blockages.

In this blog, we have covered our top 5 tips for avoiding blocked drains at domestic properties. With a greater understanding of why and how your drainage system becomes blocked in the first place, you can take the relevant steps to keep it clear.

There are fundamental differences in what blocks a kitchen drain when compared with one in the bathroom. Below, we have covered a combination of both.

A DIY Approach to Bathroom Drains

To help prevent blockages in the bathroom, and the emergency drain cleaning and plumbing services needed to clear them, two basic household substances can help: vinegar and table salt.

The bathroom drains in your Brentwood home usually get clogged with thick, sticky substances. These can include toothpaste, soap and shaving cream. When you factor hair and skin deposits in too, you’ve got a recipe for quickly forming blockages.

To stop these everyday products and natural materials from blocking your drains, pour at least one tablespoon of salt down the drain followed by a quarter cup of white vinegar. Let the mixture sit for a minimum of one hour. Pour plenty of hot water to complete the process and repeat again for optimal results.

Keep Sinks Clean

To supplement the salt and vinegar routine, pour some household bleach down the drain every now and then. While you can see results in as little as one hour, you can get optimal performance by pouring it in before going to bed and leaving it overnight.

These regular, simple maintenance tasks go a long way to removing small blockages before they have a chance to develop. Needless to say, they also negate the need for regular plumbing services at your Brentwood home too.

Degrease Your Kitchen Sink

Without the appropriate action, grease will slowly build up in your kitchen sink. You can easily avert these blocked drains, and the accompanying plumbing services. Simply pour liquid dish detergent down the sink plughole followed by plenty of boiling water. Please note – you must use boiling water.

However, don’t pour it all at once. Just before the water boils, pour a couple of tablespoons. Pour the remainder down a little at a time.

The detergent will dispel any grease present in much the same way it does from your plates. Again, repeat the process for optimal results.

Don’t Use Hot Tap Water

Unless you have a boiler tap, don’t use hot water directly from your tap to remove grease in kitchen sinks. Ordinary tap water simply isn’t hot enough to remove these build ups, even with the help of detergents.

Don’t Forget Outside Drains

The drains outside your Brentwood home can also suffer from occasional blockages. When performing our plumbing services, the biggest culprit is usually fallen leaves. One of the easiest ways to prevent this is to cover your drain with chicken wire, or something similar.

This keeps the leaves out of the drain itself, while also collecting them in a relatively neat pile for you to collect and dispose of.
